Description
The project deals with the addition of a new wing containing four apartments to an existing apartment building in Kallithea, Rethymno. The “Monolith” is born from the idea of sculptural abstraction—a gesture that captures the process of subtraction to reveal space and habitation.
The rigor of the form meets everyday life through four floor apartments, each different in plan but integrated into a unified whole that respects the existing volume of the building.
The existing staircase determines the levels and alignments, turning limitation into a point of departure for creation. In this way, the addition gains an autonomous character while engaging in a dialogue with the pre-existing structure, continuing the rhythm of the urban fabric.
The morphological approach is based on clarity and consistency. The exterior surface is rendered in an earthy tone, rooted in the landscape and the memory of the place, while the interior surfaces in an off-white hue enhance the sense of abstraction and emphasize the monumental dimension of the monolith.
This is not a mere addition, but an architectural exercise in geometry, continuity, and memory—a contemporary proposal that transforms the monolith into a dwelling without sacrificing its rigor and purity.
