Description

The project deals with the complete renovation of a ground floor apartment in Gallos, Rethymno. The space originally functioned as a warehouse, with the new requirements concerning a two-bedroom residence. Key issues that had to be taken into account are, on the one hand, the height of the warehouse, which reaches 3.70 meters, as well as the limited natural light.

The central design approach of the project is the interaction of three “organizations” within the residence, which differ in function, texture and materiality.

The first organization organizes the kitchen, dining room and main bathroom of the residence, while the second organizes the master bedroom with its en suite bathroom and various storage spaces. These two systems do not close the space up to the ceiling, but interact with a third system made of metal and glass block, which connects them from their upper side and aims to better diffuse natural light between the spaces.

The three “organisms” practically influence each other with alternating boundaries, geometries, materials and textures, thus creating a living ecosystem within the new residence.
