Description

The project deals with the design of a private two-floor residence in Agios Dimitrios, Rethymno. The central design philosophy of the project is an attempt to open the prism. A 10.5 x 10.5 x 7 m rectangle is set as the prism on which is attempted the “breaking of the box”. By breaking the enclosure of the walls, an attempt is made to eliminate the separation between inside and outside. The ground floor functions as a single open space for the daily activities of the residence, while the sleeping areas are organized on the first floor. Through the deconstruction of the “box”, outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces arise within the prism, which enhance the spatiality and dynamism of the residence. All elements in the surrounding space (swimming pool, outdoor dining area, parking area, barbecue area) have been designed as extensions of the residence, maintaining the design philosophy that every single line has emerged from the initial prism. The residence is oriented on the North-South axis, as it is considered necessary to optimally utilize the view to the sea to the north. Openings are created on all 4 sides of the building, as well as on the roof, with the aim of both transparency and optimal natural lighting and sunlight, but also of the absence of strict boundaries between the interior and exterior of the residence.
